Jon Benson
October 12, 1938 - April 7, 2014
Jon (Duck) Anthony Benson died early on the morning of April 7th after a long illness with cancer and strokes. He was admitted to hospital on March 14th where he stayed until the end of his life. He was well treated, kept comfortable and allowed to pass on.
He is survived by Gaye, his wife of 40 years. They had no children, except for their two cats, Meezer and Missy. He will be missed.
Jon was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on October 12, 1938, came west with his family to settle in the Tacoma area. He attended Shawnigan Boys School (Lakes House) and University of Alberta at Edmonton during which he attended the University of Washington Marine Labs at Friday Harbor where he learned to make a mean dish of clam chowder. He became a staff member of Red Deer College and taught biology, microbiology, zoology and marine biology. He loved having “seafood” races with the various live items he would import from the coast for the prairie-ites to explore and then cook them up for staff and students for the full experience. He married in 1974 and retired to his sailboat in 1976 to cruise the Gulf Islands and San Juans for many years. In 2000 they moved ashore and sold Loukia.
I wish to thank the Shawnigan First Responders, the ambulance crew, ER and 3rd floor nursing station staff, Dr. Terlien, and Raistlin, his resident for their care of Jon.
No service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Cowichan District Hospital Foundation with our thanks.
